How is your week going to go?

Jeannine Bailey

I decide how my week is going to go by Sunday at noon.

Let me back up.

For me to have the kind of start I want to have to my day, I need to get up by 5. I need time to do my prayer and meditation. I do a journal practice adapted from Rachel Hollis’ Start Today Journal with a gratitude list, dream/goal list, the goal I will achieve first, and things I am proud of myself for from the past 24 hours. Then, I hit the treadmill. (I wish I could say I have been running, but lately, walking is better than nothing!)

So, if I want to get enough sleep, that means I need to get bed by 10 – which means I need to have laundry done, clothes picked out, coffeepot set, food prepped before then.

Most importantly, though, I look at my calendar for the week ahead to make sure I plan enough of the activities I need. I block time out for working on this website, I block time to study for an upcoming certification, block time for Diana’s activities, block time for a date night, block time for work dinners, block time for charity events, block time for girls’ nights, block time for small group meetings. If that sounds like a lot, it is – but that’s the reason I sit down to put it all in my schedule. (Sometimes, if I am feeling extra, I color code it all!)

The fact is that if I didn’t have the habit of sitting down and putting it all in the calendar, I would spend way too many hours binge watching Veronica Mars.

My dad started me on this habit back in high school, when I was trying to balance school, extracurricular activities, and work. It worked during college when I was again trying to balance school, work and activities – and life has never really slowed down, so I keep up with the habit. It helps me to fit in all the things I want to have in my life without feeling overwhelming. The 15 minutes of planning sets me up to have 168 hours that are spent exactly like I want them to be.

And with that, good night. The alarm's going to go off at 5.
