My bathroom smells like cinnamon rolls

Jeannine Bailey

My master bathroom smells like cinnamon rolls. Now, before you jump to conclusions – no, I haven’t been eating cinnamon rolls in the bathroom. (Not that I haven’t thought about it…) My desk smells like Christmas cookies too, but I haven’t been eating cookies at my desk (today…).

The reason I am surrounded by delicious smells is because my very thoughtful friend Gail sent me a box of smelly good stuff from Bath and Body Works for Christmas, and I have decided to USE IT ALL. I put a different kind of soap next to every sink in the house, even though I had full dispensers already. (It’s getting crazy over here in Alabama!) I decided I am going to use them now instead of waiting.

Recently, I was cleaning out Diana’s bathroom and found this beautiful set of shampoo and body wash that someone gifted us for her baby shower almost NINE years ago that we never used. I just shook my head when I saw it. What in the world was I waiting for? What criteria was I using to decide when an occasion was special enough for us to use it? Instead, it sat under the sink in her bathroom for YEARS, going to waste.

After finding that, I decided I am going to use every single “special” thing we have in our house. I have this instinct to want to save things like this and only use them on special occasions. I am not sure where that comes from, but one of my New Year’s resolutions is going to use and enjoy what I have. Three times today, I have found myself smiling because I loved how my house smells, and in a time where we need to be creative to cultivate joy or have things to look forward to, it feels like this stage of the game is certainly special enough. If 2020 taught us anything, it was that we have no idea what tomorrow will bring. So, going into 2021 and beyond, I am going to burn the candles, use the soap and lotions, drink the tea, eat on the dishes, wear the robe, dry my hands on the towels and write on the stationary. I am going to use all of the special things – because truly, every day can be special if we treat it that way.
